Hollywood Park, located in the lovely Inglewood section of Los Angles, California served as the first ever test bed for the Gymkhana Grid series this past weekend. Eighty drivers came out in force to not only help shakedown the course and work out any kinks in the design before the Ken Block Invitational in December, but also to get a chance to run along side the man himself.
“This was one of the best weekends I have had all year” says Ken Block. “While it’s certainly fun to film the Gymkhana videos, at heart, I am racer and love competition. I am stoked that I was able to help bring gymkhana racing back to its roots as a timed event and in the process give your average motorsport heads a place to come and tear their modded cars around in a way they were intended to be driven. “
The field of cars ranged from full-blown drift cars and time attack racers to showroom-fresh daily drivers. And the racers were just as varied, with some having no experience in racing at all, while others - like pro-drifter Alex Pfeiffer - who showed up in a Lotus Seven replica and set the second fastest time of the day, two seconds behind Block. In doing so, he scored himself a slot at the Gymkhana GRID Invitational. Two other drivers also met the requirement of beating the one minute mark and landed themselves a space to race at Irwindale this December 3rd and 4th, too.
“I had almost as much fun watching the other competitors make their way around the course, sideways, backwards and sometimes way out of control, as I did driving my own Fiesta out there,” says Block. “It was an event similar to this in 2007 that inspired me to do the first Gymkhana film, and I am really excited that now we can bring this type of motorsport back to the masses.”
While the Gymkhana GRID series has not yet announced the list of drivers scheduled to race at the Ken Block invitational in December, there was plenty of buzz over the two days with a large media presence and a few well known drifters like Joon Maeng, Daijiro Yoshihara, and Stephan Verdier coming out to get the scoop on what is already poised to be the next big thing in motorsport.
