Confirmation officielle de Ford : 17.12.2007

FORD CONFIRMS NEW HIGH PERFORMANCE FOCUS RS IS ON THE WAY

Cologne, December 17, 2007 – Ford of Europe is confirming its plan to deliver an exciting all-new, high performance Focus RS model for launch in 2009. A design image released by the company today hints at the exciting direction the new model is taking.

The new Focus RS will be based on the dynamic new Focus ST. It will be developed by Ford Team RS, a specialist team led by Jost Capito who, as previously announced, is being appointed to the new role as Vehicle Line Director for Ford of Europe Performance Vehicles from January 1, 2008.

"With two consecutive Manufacturers' World Rally Championship titles under our belt, the time is right to create a new Focus RS," said John Fleming, Ford of Europe's President and CEO. "With the Fiesta and Focus ST models, Jost and his team have proved already that they can deliver exciting and practical performance road cars. The success of these models, combined with Jost's experience in motorsport and Ford of Europe's positive business results, mean that we now have a credible business case for a no-compromise Focus RS roadcar for more enthusiastic drivers."

The basic concept for a new Focus RS has been under development within Ford Team RS under Capito's leadership for some months already. Now that the programme has been given the 'green light', Capito and his team will be concentrating fully on this programme.

"We have reviewed our technical options and worked closely with the Design team on how the car might look, and I'm very excited by the results," said Jost Capito, "Now with the programme going ahead, the hard work really starts as the small team working on the project takes the car from prototype to production."

Stay Tuned
Ford of Europe will not reveal any of the technical details of the new Focus RS until closer to launch in 2009. The company plans to show a concept version of the car publicly for the first time in mid-2008.

"We will use the redesigned 2008 Focus ST as the base for a no-compromise RS model that will become the ultimate road-going Focus," Capito added. "Just as the Focus RS WRC owns the rally circuit, we want the new Focus RS to own the road, so we have the major competitors in our sights as we develop the car's performance, design, handling and braking."

"We're not ready to confirm any of the technical details of the new Focus RS yet - Jost and his team have a lot to do to finalise the exact specification and styling," said Fleming. "But make no mistake, I can assure you that ultimately, the car we plan to launch will be worthy of wearing the coveted Ford RS badge."

NEW FORD FOCUS RS ON TRACK AS FIRST DETAILS CONFIRMED

Cologne, June 12, 2008 – Ford RS is back and the all-new Focus RS is on track! An early prototype of the fastest Focus road car to date is now undergoing performance and durability testing at the challenging Nürburgring Circuit in Germany, in preparation for its launch in 2009.

The principal architect of the Focus RS project is Ford of Europe’s Vehicle Line Director for Performance Vehicles, Jost Capito, whose Team RS development group were responsible for the first generation Focus RS in 2002, and more recently, the Fiesta ST and the new Focus ST.

Capito said: “The new Focus RS is as much a car for driving enthusiasts as the one before it and classic Ford RS models of the past. We’re staying true to the core RS principles of a no-compromise, affordable high performance road car you can live with. The new Focus RS will have the muscles, heart and soul of a genuine RS and will be exciting to drive every day.”

The all-new Focus RS features a specially developed, turbocharged version of the Duratec 2.5-litre engine, based on Focus ST, but significantly revised to generate over 280PS and more than 400 Nm of torque, thus achieving an excellent power-to-weight ratio.

Various chassis innovations, developed in conjunction with Ford's Advanced Engineering Centre in Aachen are being tuned for the new car by the Cologne-based Ford Team RS. Their overriding objective is to achieve optimized driving dynamics and on road performance through an advanced technology front-wheel drive system, combined with a limited-slip differential.

"In early prototypes based on Focus ST vehicles, the new system is more than meeting our targets for exceptional levels of traction, handling and steering," Capito added. "Given that the enthusiastic team behind the car are all performance vehicle enthusiasts, you can imagine that our standards are high."

Ford Focus – A great starting point
The standard Ford Focus is an excellent base for a high performance car – agile, responsive and stable.

While the latest Focus ST has already proved this to be the case, the new RS will take these qualities to the next level, benefitting from extensive engineering knowledge gained through the Company's highly successful Motorsport programmes, notably with the Focus World Rally Car.

"We have no doubt that we can enhance the acclaimed qualities of the already excellent Focus for an even higher performance model than the ST," Capito added. "Now, we are going through the rigorous job of proving out our technical approach in extensive testing and tuning over a variety of roads including the most demanding track in the world, the "Green Hell" that is the Nürburgring Nordschleife!”

"With two consecutive Manufacturers’ World Rally Championship titles and the success of Fiesta and Focus ST models, we have the knowledge and the experience. The time is right for Ford to deliver a new high performance model for the legions of loyal Ford RS customers around Europe," Capito concluded.

The new Focus RS test and development programme is now well underway and will continue for several months, prior to the vehicle being readied for production in early 2009.

Although the internet and car magazines around the globe have continued to offer their opinions as to how the new car will look and drive, customers will get the first look at a production-intent vehicle with its world premiere at the London Motor Show in late July.

Further technical details of the all-new Focus RS will be released closer to launch.

NEW FORD FOCUS RS: A LEGEND RETURNS

* London Motor Show preview for exciting new Ford Focus RS
* Genuine RS performance with 300PS
* Quaife Automatic Torque Biasing limited-slip differential and innovative ‘RevoKnuckle’, for assured handling and traction
* Expressive design exudes high performance intent

BRENTWOOD, July 4, 2008 – The legendary Ford RS performance car brand is returning in the shape of the exciting new Ford Focus RS, which will be previewed on July 22 at the 2008 London International Motor Show.

The new Focus RS will go on sale in early 2009 and is being created by a small team of dedicated engineers, under the direction of Jost Capito, Ford of Europe’s Vehicle Line Director for Performance Vehicles.

For performance road car enthusiasts, the new model will mark a welcome return for the Ford RS badge. This will be the second Focus model to carry the RS mantle and promises another exciting chapter in an exciting 40-year story that began in Germany in the late 1960s and gained momentum across Europe with the launch of the 1970 Escort RS1600.

Capito said: “We want the new Focus RS to be a serious high performance car – as much a car for driving enthusiasts as the one before it and classic Ford RS models of the past. We’re staying true to the core RS principles of an exciting, yet affordable performance road car you can live with every day.”

Authentic RS presence and style

Before it even turns a wheel, the new Focus RS exudes the presence, sporty style and lowered, ‘meaner’ appearance expected of a genuine Ford RS. Overt performance styling details mix with subtle revisions to create a planted, powerful stance and the promise of an exciting drive.

The London show car previews the design intent for a final production vehicle, though as development work continues, some final details may change before volume production begins.

The vehicle is finished in a special bright green paint with inlaid metallic flake, a striking, modern interpretation of the 1970s Le Mans Green of the Escort RS1600 era.

The vibrant exterior colour is contrasted with a number of performance styling details highlighted in gloss ‘piano black’, including the strip at the leading edge of the bonnet, the deep housings for the integrated front fog lamps and door mirrors with integrated side indicators.

Front and rear quarter panels have been revised to incorporate wider wheel arches and a wider track, complemented by revised, deeper side rocker mouldings. In another visual reminder of the car’s performance potential, triangular, RS-badged vents sit behind the front wheel arches. Two classic-style bonnet louvres are both a styling hint at the power beneath and a practical requirement, maintaining correct system temperatures.

The completely new front bumper design for Focus RS incorporates a deep front airdam with a large, mesh lower grille in an extended trapezoid. Stylish and practical, this prominent feature represents the latest Ford 'kinetic design' face and also is finished in piano black. Above, chromed xenon headlamps stand out like cat’s eyes and are framed by matt-black housings with unique additional vents running underneath.

At the rear, a deep new rear bumper incorporates a large venturi tunnel to its lower edge with small vents at each corner of the bumper, emphasizing the car’s width. Two impressive chromed exhaust tailpipes sit each side of the black venturi, creating a purposeful rear view for the car.

Above, a unique, twin-element, black RS rear spoiler sits at the Focus RS’ roofline, echoing both RS models of the past and the World Rally-winning Focus WRC that has been its inspiration.

“We believe it’s vitally important that a Focus RS looks like both a Focus and an RS – it needs to be individual, distinctive and overt in its performance styling, but it also needs to show a clear progression from and relationship to Focus ST”, said Stefan Lamm, Chief Exterior Designer, Ford of Europe.

High performance interior

Inside, this theme continues with a unique and appropriately performance-oriented interior, dominated by bespoke, sculpted Recaro high-performance sports seats, specially designed and trimmed for excellent support, even when driving enthusiastically. Each is colour-matched to the exterior, with ebony leather accents and ‘RS’ and ‘Recaro’ logos stitched into each backrest.

Elsewhere, colour brings new excitement to the Focus interior, building on the sporty interior theme of Focus ST with more use of accents matched to the exterior colour, brushed aluminium highlights and overt performance styling. Even the rear seats feature higher side bolsters and a microfibre finish to echo those up front.

The centre console is finished in a stylish gloss, carbon-look trim and metallic highlights abound, from air vents, door grab handles, switchgear and gearshift surround, to unique RS-branded scuff plates on the door sills. These highlights contrast with a black-trimmed roof lining, emphasising the sporty, cockpit feel.

The driver is reminded this is a special Focus at every touch, with a gear lever finished with a six speed gear shift graphic in RS blue, a sporty, three-spoke steering wheel, finished with ‘Ford’ and ‘RS’ logos and even aluminium foot pedals. The performance driving environment is completed by three additional gauges from the Focus ST, including turbo pressure, sitting atop the centre console and angled toward the driver’s eyeline.

Powerful RS heart

At the heart of the all-new Focus RS is a specially developed, turbocharged version of the Duratec 2.5-litre 5-cylinder engine. Significantly revised for high performance, this powerplant is targeting an impressive power output of 300PS and over 410Nm of torque, contributing to an excellent power-to-weight ratio.

Such significant increases are not simply the result of altering engine management or boost pressure: starting with the Duratec 2.5-litre block, Ford RS engineers developed unique camshafts, a revised cylinder head and gasket and revised intake and exhaust manifold system for the car.

Although the car is still in development, prior to its launch in early 2009, early performance testing indicates a 0-100km/h (0-62mph) time of under six seconds.

A traction ‘Revo’-lution

Throughout Focus RS’ development, Capito and his team have been keeping a sharp focus on creating a car that delivers excellent performance and traction.

Various innovations, developed as a result of customer feedback from previous performance Fords, have allowed engineers to keep the new Focus RS as front-wheel drive, with a limited-slip differential, while still achieving demanding targets for traction, handling and steering.

The new Ford Focus RS is equipped with an innovative front suspension system known as a ‘RevoKnuckle’, which is designed to reduce unwanted steering disturbance and torque steer, the impact of torque on steering in front-wheel driven vehicles. Torque steer occurs during hard acceleration, cornering or driving on uneven surfaces, when torque on the driven wheels exceeds grips levels. It is characterised by sudden turning force on the steering wheel and can be exacerbated by vehicles with wide tyres and limited-slip differentials.

In Focus RS, the RevoKnuckle works in conjunction with a Quaife Automatic Torque Biasing limited-slip differential. Ford Team RS engineers have worked closely with Ford's Advanced Research Centre in Aachen, Germany to develop the RevoKnuckle technology specifically for the high performance Focus RS. It allows the simplicity of a traditional McPherson strut arrangement, but with geometry settings that minimize steering disturbances and torque steer, principally a reduction in steering offset.

“The Ford Focus is an excellent base for a high performance car – agile, responsive and stable,” explained Capito. “We studied at length how best to enhance these qualities for a high performance model. Our work has shown clearly that our approach in combining a tuned RevoKnuckle with the Quaife differential is an ideal solution for a high performance front-wheel-drive road car like Focus RS.

“As you would expect, we gave all-wheel-drive careful consideration, but by combining and tuning these elements and learning from Ford’s expertise in industry-leading handling, we have managed to eliminate the weight of AWD from the car and still have been able to target a class-leading balance of traction, handling and performance.

“The result is a lightweight set-up, that will deliver the right blend of traction and razor sharp controllability – in a way no one would have expected from front-wheel-drive, and we believe we have made the right choice,” Capito concluded.

Dynamic, agile and responsive

A genuine Focus RS must maintain and enhance the reputation for responsive, precise handling for which Focus is acclaimed and considerable engineering effort has ensured that the new Focus RS will do just that.

Driving quality developments for Focus RS include a 40mm wider track, stronger, longer driveshafts, revised springs and dampers and a thicker, longer rear anti-roll bar. At the same time, the steering system has been retuned to provide an even sharper steering response and very precise feedback.

Brakes also have been uprated, with 336mm ventilated front discs and 300mm rear discs generating vice-like stopping power on road or track. Large calipers peek out from behind unique 19-inch wheels, wrapped in 235/35 low profile Continental tyres.

A special version of Ford’s ESP system has also been developed for Focus RS, designed to allow a very sporty driving style before activating. Intensive work to refine the natural handling abilities of the car has allowed the ESP system to carry a full de-activation option for enthusiast drivers and especially for track use.

“We are refining all the handling characteristics of Focus RS without ESP, to hone its natural responses, rather than use ESP to help its handling. In Focus RS, ESP is a pure safety device”, explained Capito.

Reliable and durable

In creating the new Focus RS, Ford’s Team RS engineers have had to meet the same stringent targets for durability and reliability as those set for the rest of the Focus range.

Despite its many bespoke engineering and styling elements, Focus RS will be built entirely on the main Focus production line in Saarlouis, Germany and offered with a standard Ford of Europe warranty.

A great heritage

The new Focus RS represents a significant moment in the heritage of both the Focus and Ford RS brands.

It is 10 years since the Ford Focus was first revealed to the world at the Geneva Motor Show in 1998, paving the way for a range of Ford vehicles whose exciting design was matched by class-leading driving quality. Since this time, more than 5.3 million Ford Focus models have been built in Europe, including Russia, with the car also built and sold in North America and Asia.

At the same time, the new Focus RS marks the return of the famous but rare Ford RS badge, last seen on the first-generation Focus RS in 2002 and with a distinguished heritage stretching back 38 years including Fiesta, Escort and Sierra models.

“RS is uniquely important to us in terms of our performance heritage and World Rally Championship success, while the Focus has played a major part in establishing Ford’s excellent reputation for driving dynamics," said John Fleming, Ford of Europe President and CEO. "The all-new Focus RS will embrace and celebrate both of these – it will be a genuine RS and a genuine Focus and I’m confident it won’t disappoint in either area”.

RS - THE RALLYE SPORT HERITAGE

BRENTWOOD, Essex, 3 July, 2008 – Since 1970, the RS (Rallye Sport) badge has identified Ford's highest-performing road cars.

The Rallye Sport name has been applied to 21 models, which often proved their worth by winning in motorsport as well as in the market-place. Along with the "ST" badge, the "RS" designation has never been applied lightly, with each and every RS model and derivative offering a special blend of performance, roadholding, vehicle safety, refinement - and great value for money.

RS-badged Fords have been built in many different forms. There have been front-engined and mid-engined types; front-wheel-drive, rear-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive cars; and four-cylinder or six-cylinder engines, either normally-aspirated or turbocharged.

Many have used wind-tunnel testing to evolve innovative aerodynamic features, such as the rear aerofoils fitted to Sierra and Escort RS Cosworths. All have pushed the boundaries of technology, and have provided exceptional stability and handling.

The original RS-badged Ford was the 1970 Ford Escort RS1600, the first-ever Ford road car to use a 16-valve twin-overhead-camshaft engine, and the first to be assembled in the new Advanced Vehicle Operation factory at Aveley, in Essex. It also became the first Ford model to be sold through an expanding network of specialised Rallye Sport dealerships.

Like many RS models, the RS1600 (and its close relation, the single-cam engined RS2000) matched its success in the market place with wins in races and rallies, including the East African Safari rally of 1972, three RAC rallies, and the European Touring Car Championship of 1974.

The Ford Capri RS2600 and RS3100 models were high-powered flagship versions of Ford's best-selling coupe range of the 1970s, which also won scores of races, including the European Touring Car Championships of 1971 and 1972.

In the late 1970s, the distinctively-styled quad-headlamp Ford Escort RS2000 became the best-selling RS model of all time, while the Ford Escort RS1800 won more rallies than any other British car. It won the World Rally Championship for Makes in 1979 and provided power for both Bjorn Waldegard (1979) and Ari Vatanen (1981) to win the Drivers' titles. Such Escorts are still popular among rallying clubmen.

In the 1980s the front-wheel-drive RS1600i was the first Escort to use a fuel-injected engine, and the first to use a five-speed gearbox, while the RS Turbo of 1984 was the first to use a turbocharged engine, and a viscous-coupling limited-slip differential. Both models became successful in Touring Car racing, especially the RS Turbo, whose 1.6-litre engine could produce up to 270bhp.

The mid-engined RS200, of which only 200 cars were ever made between 1984 and 1986, was an impressive two-seat supercar, intended for Group B rallying. It featured a race-bred steel and carbon-fibre chassis, a turbocharged Cosworth BDT engine and four-wheel-drive. Strikingly styled, the RS200 was exclusive and the most expensive RS model so far.

During the 1980s, the Cosworth YB-engined 150mph Sierra RS Cosworth family became so successful as fast, value-for-money, road cars that they became a target for thieves. The RS500 derivatives (of which just 500 examples were built) were so dominant in motor racing that the rules of entire Championships had to be re-cast to make sure they did not win every race, every time.

Even so, and before this could be done, the 500bhp RS500 race cars won the World Touring Car Championship in 1987, the European Touring Car Championship in 1988, along with hundreds of successes at National level.

The final Sierra RS Cosworth of 1990 had a sophisticated four-wheel-drive powertrain and a shortened version of that car’s chassis platform, along with a 227bhp engine, was used in the Escort RS Cosworth three-door hatchback. This car's extrovert aerodynamic package ensured positive downforce at all road speeds.

In the mid-1990s the Escort RS Cosworth returned Ford to the top of the rally standings, including victory in the 1994 Monte Carlo Rally - and it also inspired the birth of the Escort World Rally Car of 1997-1998, which brought that pedigree to a nostalgic close.

During the 1990s, two superfast versions of the front-wheel-drive Ford Fiesta were marketed - the RS Turbo with a turbocharged CVH engine, the RS1800 with the award-winning 1.8-litre Zetec 16-valve twin-cam unit.
At the same time the distinctive front-wheel-drive 2.0-litre Escort RS2000 became the first Ford to use the smooth and torquey 16-valve engine which was later fitted to many Scorpio and Galaxy models. A later derivative, which also carried the RS badge, the RS2000 4x4, was the first of the 1990s Escort family to use four-wheel-drive.

No sooner had the Focus been introduced, than work began on a high-performance RS version. To match the much-praised front-wheel-drive chassis of the Focus, this model, equipped with a turbocharged 212 bhp derivative of the Ford Duratec engine, and a sophisticated transmission, offered 143mph performance with impressive levels of traction and roadholding.

The Ford RS brand has gained tremendous respect over the years and the new-generation Focus RS upholds the tradition of the high-performance Ford engineered for the true enthusiast.

NOUVELLE FORD FOCUS RS : LE RETOUR D’UNE LEGENDE

* Présentation en avant-première de la toute nouvelle Ford Focus RS au Salon Automobile de Londres
* Avec 300 ch, la Focus RS est la Focus la plus puissante jamais commercialisée
* Le différentiel à glissement limité Quaife A.T.B. (associé à un innovant système « RevoKnuckle ») assure une tenue de route et une motricité hors pair
* Le style sans ambiguïté promet des performances d'exception
* Commercialisation prévue début 2009

Cologne, September 5, 2008 - The legendary Ford RS performance car brand is back and faster than ever. The stunning new 2009 Focus RS is previewed at Paris, while development work has confirmed it as the fastest ever European Ford production car.

Ford is confirming performance target figures for Focus RS as 0-100km/h in under
6.0 seconds and a top speed of 260 km/h or more.

However, for Team RS engineers, headed by Ford of Europe’s Vehicle Line Director for Performance Vehicles, Jost Capito, this is only part of the story.

Said Capito: “We believe the new Focus RS will change expectations of a front-wheel-drive high performance car in the way it translates its power into precision, driveability, traction and performance. It’s the fastest volume production car Ford has ever produced in Europe, yet it’s also a driveable and practical car you can use every day. That’s a significant achievement in driving dynamics.”

The exciting new Focus RS is being previewed at the 2008 Paris Motor Show, following a debut in London in July, before going on sale in early 2009.

Green is Go
Ford is also confirming that Focus RS customers will have three colour options from launch, including the vibrant, bright green metallic paint finish following the preview vehicle’s extremely positive reception.

This colour was chosen as both a modern interpretation of the 1970s Ford Le Mans Green and a reflection of the livery worn by Ford’s World Rally Championship Focus cars. To mark the obvious links between the new Focus RS and the Focus RS WRC, plus, significantly, the company's global partnership and association with BP, the new colour will be called ‘Ultimate Green’ for production.

Focus RS will also be available in Ford Performance Blue and Frozen White, each with the choice of blue or green colour matched interior. A full black leather option will be available for all three exterior colours.

For performance car enthusiasts, the new car will mark a welcome return for the Ford RS badge. The new Focus RS will be the second Focus model to carry the RS mantle and promises another exciting chapter in an exciting 40-year Ford RS story that began in Germany in the late 1960s and gained momentum across Europe with the launch of the 1970 Escort RS1600.

Authentic RS presence and style
Before it even turns a wheel, the new Focus RS exudes the presence, high-performance style and lowered, ‘meaner’ appearance expected of a genuine Ford RS. Overt performance styling details mix with subtle revisions to create a planted, powerful stance and the promise of an exciting drive.

The Paris Show car previews the design intent for a final production vehicle, though as development work continues, some final details may change before production begins. The completely new front bumper design for Focus RS incorporates a deep front airdam with a large, mesh lower grille and an extended trapezoid. The stylish trapezoid represents the latest Ford kinetic design ‘face’ and is finished in high gloss black.

Chromed xenon headlamps stand out like cat’s eyes, framed by black housings with unique mesh design feature running underneath. The frontal aspect is finished with a high gloss black strip at the leading edge of the bonnet and integrated fog lamps, set in deep housings.

Above, two classic-style bonnet louvres are both a styling hint at the power beneath and a practical requirement, maintaining correct system temperatures.

Front and rear quarter panels have been revised to incorporate wider wheel arches and a wider track, complemented by revised, deeper side rocker mouldings. In another visual reminder of the car’s performance potential, triangular, RS-badged vents sit behind the front wheel arches. Even the side mirrors, with integrated side indicator repeaters, are finished in high gloss black.

At the rear, a deep new rear bumper incorporates a large venturi tunnel to its lower edge – also in high gloss black – with small vents at each corner of the bumper, emphasizing the car’s width. Two impressive chromed exhaust tailpipes sit each side of the venturi, creating a purposeful rear view for the car.

Above, a unique, twin-blade, black RS rear spoiler sits at the Focus RS’ roofline, echoing both RS models of the past and the World Rally-winning Focus WRC that has been its inspiration.

“It’s vital that a Focus RS looks like both a Focus and an RS – it needs to be individual, distinctive and overt in its performance styling, authentic to the RS tradition, but it also needs to meet the contemporary desires of Focus customers and show a clear progression from and relationship to Focus ST,” said Stefan Lamm, Chief Exterior Designer, Ford of Europe.

High performance interior
Inside, this theme continues with a unique and appropriately performance-oriented interior, designed to appeal to customer tastes and balance genuine sports performance with a strong sense of style and quality.

The cabin is dominated by bespoke Recaro high-performance sports seats, specially designed and trimmed for excellent support, even when driving enthusiastically.

Even the rear seats are sculpted, with higher side bolsters and a microfibre finish to echo those up front and create a four-seat vehicle.

The centre console is finished in a stylish carbon-look trim and metallic highlights abound, from air vents, door grab handles, switchgear and gearshift surround, to unique RS-branded scuff plates on the door sills. These highlights contrast with a
black-trimmed roof lining, emphasising the sporty, cockpit feel.

The driver is reminded this is no ordinary Focus at every touch, with a gear lever finished with a six speed gear shift graphic in RS blue, a sporty, three-spoke steering wheel, finished with ‘Ford’ and ‘RS’ logos and even aluminium foot pedals. The performance driving environment is completed by three additional gauges from the Focus ST, including turbo pressure, sitting atop the centre console and angled toward the driver’s eyeline.

Powerful RS heart
At the heart of the all-new Focus RS is a specially developed, turbocharged version of the Duratec 2.5-litre, five-cylinder engine. Significantly revised for high performance, this powerplant is targeting an impressive power output of 300PS and 440Nm of torque, contributing to an excellent power-to-weight ratio.

Such significant increases are not simply the result of altering engine management or boost pressure: starting with the Duratec 2.5-litre block, Ford RS engineers developed unique camshafts, a revised cylinder head and gasket and revised intake and manifold system for the car.

In addition, specific measurements have been taken to let the RS enthusiast enjoy a sound to fully match the impressive performance of the Focus RS. A specially tuned 'sound symposer' transmits defined noises from the intake system to the passenger compartment, whilst the RS exhaust system contributes a very sporty and sonorous
5-cylinder turbo-sound.

A traction ‘Revo’-lution
Throughout Focus RS’ development, Capito and his team are keeping a razor sharp focus on creating a car with excellent performance and traction.

Various innovations, developed as a result of customer feedback from previous performance Fords, have allowed engineers to keep the new Focus RS as front-wheel drive, with a limited-slip differential, while still achieving demanding targets for traction, handling and steering.

The new Ford Focus RS is equipped with an innovative front suspension system known as a ‘RevoKnuckle’, which is designed to reduce unwanted steering disturbance and torque steer.

‘Torque steer’ – the impact of torque on steering in front-wheel driven vehicles – can occur during hard acceleration, cornering or driving on uneven surfaces, when torque on the driven wheels exceeds grip levels.
It allows the simplicity of a traditional McPherson strut arrangement, but with geometry settings that minimise steering disturbances and torque steer, principally a reduction in steering offset.

“The Ford Focus is an excellent base for a high performance car – agile, responsive and stable,” explained Capito. “We studied at length how best to enhance these qualities for a high performance model. Our work has shown clearly our approach in combining a tuned RevoKnuckle with the Quaife differential is an ideal solution for a high performance front-wheel-drive road car like Focus RS.

“We gave all-wheel-drive careful consideration – but by combining and tuning these elements and learning from Ford’s expertise in industry-leading handling, we believe we can eliminate the weight of AWD from the car and still deliver a class-leading balance of traction, handling and performance.

“The result is a lightweight set-up, that will deliver the right blend of traction and razor sharp controllability – in a way no one would have expected from front-wheel-drive,” Capito concluded.

At the same time, the steering system is retuned to provide an even sharper steering response and very precise feedback.

Brakes have also been uprated, generating vice-like stopping power on road or track. Large calipers peek out from behind unique 19-inch wheels that are wrapped in 235/35 low profile Continental tyres.

A special version of Ford’s ESP system has also been developed for Focus RS, designed to allow a very sporty driving style before activating. Intensive work to refine the natural handling abilities of the car has allowed the ESP system to carry a full
de-activation option for enthusiast drivers and especially for track use.
“We are refining all the handling characteristics of Focus RS without ESP, to hone its natural responses, rather than use ESP to help its handling. In Focus RS, ESP is a pure safety device,” explained Capito.

Reliable and durable
In creating the new Focus RS, Ford’s Team RS engineers have to meet the same stringent targets for durability and reliability as set for the rest of the Focus range.

Despite its many bespoke engineering and styling elements, Focus RS will be built entirely on the main Focus production line in Saarlouis, Germany and offered with a standard Ford of Europe warranty.

A great heritage
In being both a genuine Ford RS and a full member of the Focus family, the new Focus RS represents a significant moment in the heritage of both brands.

It is ten years since the Ford Focus was first revealed to the world at the Geneva Motor Show in 1998, paving the way for a range of Ford vehicles whose exciting design was matched by class-leading driving quality.

Since this time, more than 5.4 million Ford Focus models have been built in Europe, including Russia, with the car also built and sold in North America and Asia.

At the same time, the new Focus RS marks the return of the famous but rare Ford RS badge, last seen on the first-generation Focus RS in 2002 and with a distinguished heritage stretching back 38 years including Fiesta, Escort and Sierra models.

“RS is a unique part of Ford’s high performance heritage and the Focus has played a major part in establishing Ford’s excellent reputation for driving dynamics. The all-new Focus RS will embrace and celebrate both of these – it will be a genuine RS and a genuine Focus and I’m confident it won’t disappoint in either area,” concluded Capito.

FLYING FINN STEERS FORD FOCUS RS INTO SPOTLIGHT

BRENTWOOD, Essex, 28 November 2008 -- Spectators at Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium for the final stage of the second leg of Wales Rally GB in December will be treated to a world-first spectacle - the driving debut of Ford’s fastest-ever European production car, the new Focus RS.

Behind the wheel of the Performance Blue machine will be a man well qualified to appreciate the Focus RS’s awe-inspiring capabilities – 'Flying Finn' Marcus Grönholm, former double World Rally Champion and ex-Ford WRC driver. But this time he won't be in competition.

The much-anticipated Focus RS, which goes on sale early in Spring next year, will take pride of place at the stadium in a cavalcade of heritage Rallye Sport (RS) cars stretching back nearly 40 years.

The new car is powered by a turbocharged Duratec 2.5-litre, five-cylinder engine. With its unique camshafts, revised cylinder head and gasket, intake and manifold system, the unit is designed to deliver 300PS and 440Nm peak torque.

Combined with a six-speed transmission, this translates to 0-62mph acceleration in under six seconds and a targeted top speed of 161mph. Yet the designers have succeeded in combining high performance with a car that is eminently practical for everyday use.

The combination of Quaife Automatic Torque Biasing limited-slip differential and innovative RevoKnuckle front-suspension system allows a class-leading balance of traction, handling and performance to be derived from front- as opposed to all-wheel drive, with consequent power-to-weight advantages.

A wider track, enhanced drive-shafts and rear anti-roll bar, revised springs and dampers, retuned steering and uprated brakes all contribute to outstanding sports handling. A specially developed version of Ford's ESP system provides added safety.

The metallic Performance Blue of the car Marcus Grönholm will drive reflects the livery of Ford's World Rally Championship Focus cars, though the RS will also be available in 'Ultimate Green' and Frozen White.

Similarly, the black twin-blade rear spoiler echoes both RS models of the past and the World Rally-winning Focus RS WRC that inspired the latest version.

The RS badge was last seen on the first-generation Focus RS in 2002. Over 38 years it has also graced Fiesta, Escort and Sierra models, as a Cardiff RS cavalcade will reflect.

The Cardiff stage of Wales Rally GB, the last round of the FIA World Rally Championship, takes place on 6 December. It looks set to attract big crowds, keen to see the much-anticipated Ford v Citroen battle at close quarters.

Until this year, Marcus Grönholm would have been a competitor. The 40-year-old driver started his rallying career in a Ford Escort in 1987, going on to win 30 world rally victories, and becoming World Champion in 2000 and 2002.

In 2006 and 2007 he drove the Ford Focus RS WRC and helped secure two world manufacturer titles for Ford before retiring from full-time competition.
